Dr Wong Chin Yoong

Dr. Wong Chin Yoong is currently a professor of economics at Universiti Tunku Abdul Rahman (UTAR), Malaysia. He obtained his PhD from Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) with his thesis working on the macroeconomic effects of global production sharing accepted with zero amendment, the first in the Faculty of Economics and Management in UPM since 1974. He was the visiting research fellow to the Stockholm China Economic Research Institute at the Stockholm School of Economics.
He specializes in international macroeconomics and development economics, and has published widely in international reputable journals, which include Economics Letters, International Review of Economics and Finance, Review of Development Economics, China Economic Review, Economic Modelling, Economic Systems, The Manchester School, among many others. He has years of experience in applying macroeconomic modelling and simulation for a variety of issues, covering business comovements, prudential capital control, Islamic finance, platform finance, ethnic diversity and growth, and structural reforms.
His works go beyond the academic community to the public sector and private businesses as an external consultant providing academic inputs. He led a placemaking project commissioned by Majlis Bandaraya Ipoh for the economic development of Chinese and Indian communities in Ipoh; he was invited to participate in two UNDP projects related to global vaccination and Sarawak’s temporary basic income initiatives for macroeconomic modelling; he has been commissioned to model electricity decarbonization in Malaysia by Tenaga Nasional Berhad Research Sdn Bhd and develop a secondary market trading mechanism for equity crowdfunding by MyStartr Sdn Bhd. He wrote a report on China-US decoupling for ASEAN-China Legal Cooperation Center, and food supply-chain security for Federation of Malaysian Manufacturers, among many others.
Above all, he is a public intellectual reaching out to general audiences via hundreds of popular writings and public appearances as invited speakers, commentators, and resource person to printed, audio, visual and social media domestically and internationally. He is a columnist to Nanyang Siang Pau and hosts a TV program at 8TV called “Money Matters (Mandarin)” to discuss topical economic, business, and finance issues, domestically and globally, with invited professionals and business leaders. He is the author to “The World in Flux: Navigating Malaysian and the Global Economy” (Mandarin) recently published.
