While Malaysia has proven to be an attractive destination for investments, National Recovery Council chairman Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin (file pic) said that there is still much room for improvement. The former prime minister pointed out that 85.3% of the approved foreign direct investments (FDIs) in the first three quarters of 2021 came from just five countries. These countries are Singapore, China, Austria, Japan and the Netherlands. “More needs to be done to encourage foreign investments from other countries into Malaysia, and likewise, Malaysia to other countries in pursuit of untapped wealth potential,” he said. Muhyiddin was speaking at the 2022 Malaysia Economic and Strategic Outlook Forum, which is a flagship event brought by KSI Strategic Institute for Asia Pacific.

Malaysia University of Science and Technology (MUST) professor, Geoffrey Williams said that while the country would see economic growth, the figures would not be as optimistic as predicted by international forecasters due to a variety of factors, including the lockdown policies. “It would probably be around 3.5 per cent because the lockdown policies have affected all aspects of the domestic economy, and we have seen the average and median wages falling,” he said. WIlliams said this during the 2022 Malaysia Economic and Strategic Outlook Forum on the topic ‘State of the Nation: Understanding Opportunities and Risks in 2022 To Build Back Better’.

THE government is taking a holistic approach to tackle all related factors and impacts in order to retain consumer purchasing power during periods of rising food prices. Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs Minister Datuk Seri Alexander Nanta Linggi (picture) said this is to help food-deficient households during these periods. He added that the Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs Ministry (KPDNHEP) is aware of the struggles faced by businesses and consumers due to escalating prices, particularly the costs of food products. “Globally, the price hikes happened due to rampant demand for goods and services that met bottlenecks due to supply chain disruptions. “While many of these price increases are caused by external factors beyond the government’s control, we are, nonetheless, doing our best to contain the situation,” he said at a special address at Malaysia Economic and Strategic Outlook Forum (MESOF) 2022 organised by KSI Strategic Institute for Asia Pacific yesterday.
