KUALA LUMPUR (June 14): There is a need for Malaysia to recognise the fact that the labour data, and a great deal of the productivity data, are actually quite misleading in order to grasp the actual economic situation, said economist Dr Jomo Kwame Sundaram. He said in the middle of last decade, using telecommunication data, it was estimated that there were about 6.7 million foreign workers in Malaysia. “Looking at the labour data during the period, there were about 15 million people in the Malaysian labour force of whom 13 million were citizens while about 2.2 million were foreigners. In other words, there were about 4.5 million who were not even recorded as foreign workers in this country,” Dr Jomo said during a session “Accelerating Structural Transformation, Driving Economic Growth” at the Malaysia Economic Summit 2022 here on Tuesday (June 14).

KUALA LUMPUR: Despite being fortified by sound economic fundamentals and the economy is on its way to a recovery after turning the corner against the pandemic, Malaysia must be clear-eyed about the challenges on the horizon. Bursa Malaysia chairman Tan Sri Abdul Wahid Omar said there were a number of factors to be optimistic about the country’s growth outlook and most importantly, it was transitioning to the endemic phase with the relaxation of pandemic control measures and reopening of international borders. "The endemic phase is likely to contribute to the revival of Malaysia’s tourism industry which supports 3.5 million jobs. "The high vaccination rate with close to 80 per cent of the population being vaccinated with two doses is another important factor. This compares favourably against ASEAN’s rate of 60 per cent,” he said in his welcoming remarks at the Malaysian Economic Summit 2022 organised by the KSI Strategic Institute for Asia Pacific here today.

PETALING JAYA: An economist has advised the government to catalogue issues that cause bottlenecks in economic growth, affecting economic resilience, competitiveness and productivity, saying this would help to prioritise issues that must be addressed urgently. Among the pressing issues were foreign workers, digitalisation, education, infrastructure, inflation, and the supply chain. Shankaran Nambiar, a senior research fellow at the Malaysian Institute of Economic Research (MIER), said the catalogue was important because Malaysia was currently facing multiple challenges concurrently. He cited the Covid-19 health crisis, food security and stagflation, among others, as examples of these challenges.
