The Binaries of Modern-Day Nationality: Athletes and National Loyalty in Malaysia
Hyren Gan
Using examples from international sports and Malaysia’s football naturalisation controversy, this article examines how nationality and belonging are often treated conditionally rather than equally. The author argues that Malaysian society tends to embrace individuals who bring prestige or utility while simultaneously marginalising long-established ethnic minorities through racialised politics and societal discrimination.
Hyren Gan critiques the concept of “conditional national belonging,” arguing that Malaysia’s multicultural identity is undermined when nationality becomes tied to political convenience, race, or usefulness. The article calls for a more inclusive understanding of Malaysian identity grounded in equal recognition, structural reform, and the rejection of racialised exclusionary practices.
