Dato’ Abdul Majid Khan was formerly the Ambassador of Malaysia to the People’s Republic of China, a post he has held for seven years until his retirement on 2nd January 2005.

Dato’ Abdul Majit, a career Diplomat, joined the Administrative and Diplomatic Service in 1970. In his thirty- four years of service, Dato’ Abdul Majit has served in the Prime Minister’s Department as well as in several Malaysian Missions abroad and senior positions in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Malaysia. From October 1972 to February 1976, Dato’ Abdul Majit served as Secondary Secretary in Laos. He was transferred to Embassy of Malaysia, Hanoi, Vietnam, at the end of the Vietnam War and served as the First Secretary until February 1981. He was appointed the Counsellor at the Embassy of Malaysia, Beijing (PRC) from February 1981 to October 1985.

Dato’ Abdul Majit returned to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Malaysia and was promoted as the Undersecretary of Southeast Asia and Pacific Division. From June 1988 to November 1989, he served as the Deputy Chief of Mission at the Embassy of Malaysia in Washington D.C. In March 1990, he was appointed Ambassador to Nigeria and concurrently accredited to Ghana, Côte de Ivoire, Sierra Leone and Cameroon. In 1993, he was appointed Under Secretary for West Asia, Africa and OIC in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. In March 1996, he was appointed the Director General of ASEAN Division of the Ministry of foreign affairs, which he served until January 1998.

In 1998, he was appointed as the Ambassador of Malaysia to the People’s Republic China and concurrently accredited to the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea until the retirement on the 24 January 2005.

As Under Secretary in the Foreign Ministry, Dato’ Abdul Majit participated in several Prime Ministerial and Ministerial visits to ASEAN countries, West Asia and African States. He is a member of the Malaysian delegation to several ASEAN Ministerial Conferences and Head of State/Government Summits as well as to several Organization of Islamic Conference Ministerial and Summit Meetings. As Director General of ASEAN, he actively participated in the organization of the 30th ASEAN Ministerial Meeting held in Kuala Lumpur as well as the ASEAN Head of Summit and the 10+3 Summit Meetings in Malaysia.

Upon his retirement, he continued to actively participate in various conferences and seminars dealing on the subject of Malaysia Foreign policy, Economic Development, Malaysia-China Relationships and ASEAN. He has also been actively sharing his China experiences with the Malaysia business community, Chambers of Commerce. He made regular interviews with both the Chinese and Malaysian press and TV.

He was also a member of the ASEAN-China Eminent Person Group under the chairmanship of Tun Musa Hitam that provides recommendations to the respective Governments on the future ASEAN China Relations and cooperation for the coming years, from 2005 to 2020.

Dato’ Abdul Majit was appointed as Chairman of the Malaysian Investment Development of Authority (MIDA) from 2019 to 2021.

In his capacity as the President of the Malaysia-China Friendship Association since 2005, Dato’ Majit has been active in promoting understanding and friendship between Malaysia and China at the level of people to people, as well as in the context of ASEAN-China Friendship. In recognition of his contribution, Dato’ Majit was awarded the “Friendship Star” by the Ambassador of People’s Republic of China in Malaysia in 2015 and by the Guangdong Provincial Government in 2014.

Family and Early Education:
Born in 1946 in Johore, Dato’ Majit holds a Bachelor of Economics (Hons), University of Malaya in 1970. He had his earlier education in Kluang (Johor) and English College, Johor Bahru. He is married with 5 children.
