President, Timber Association of Sabah
MR. NORMAN WONG is a prominent figure in Sabah’s forestry sector, serving as the President of the Timber Association of Sabah (TAS) and a vocal advocate for Industrial Tree Planting (ITP) as the cornerstone of Sabah’s green economy.
As President of TAS, he represents Sabah’s timber industry stakeholders, focusing on sustainable forestry practices, policy advocacy, and combating misinformation about illegal logging.
He also champions ITP as Sabah’s “green economy” driver, arguing that 5% of Sabah’s land (400,000 hectares) dedicated to ITP could generate 15% of Sabah’s GDP (RM 12 billion/year), 80,000 jobs, and 8 million cubic meters
of sustainable timber annually.
Norman calls for a new governance entity to break bureaucratic silos, integrating Forestry, Industrial Development, and Finance ministries for cohesive ITP implementation. He urges Sabah to adopt China’s industry model—centralized policy, incentives, and scaled supply chains—to build a competitive ITP value chain. He highlights statutory/tax barriers (e.g., removal of tax incentives, 7-year loss carry limits) deterring ITP investments, and stresses that data gaps and non-standardized systems hinder investor confidence in ITP.
His vision for Sabah’s Green Economy are:
1. Productive Raw Materials: ITP as 20–25x more efficient than natural forests.
2. Integrated Supply Chains: Automated processing, zero-waste systems, and scalable value chains. 3. Policy-Driven Transformation: Replicating China’s EV strategy with state-led investment and incentives.
Norman Wong is a pragmatic industry leader bridging sustainability and economic growth in Sabah. His expertise lies in diagnosing systemic barriers (policy fragmentation, data gaps) and pushing scalable solutions (dedicated ITP, Chinese-style industrial policy). For Sabah’s ITP aspirations, he is both a catalyst and critical voice demanding actionable frameworks beyond “visionary dreams”.
