Tengku Aizan Hamid graduated with a PhD degree in Human Development and Family Studies with a multidiscipline minor in Gerontology from Iowa State University Ames Iowa in 1992. She was responsible for the establishment of the Institute of Gerontology in 2002 and was appointed as its founding director on April 1st, 2002, until May 2020. The Institute was rebranded to the Malaysia Research Institute in Ageing in November 2015 based in Universiti Putra Malaysia She rejoins the institute as research fellow 2021- Aug 8th, 2023. Dato Dr Tengku leads over 50 research projects and acts as co-investigator in over 30 projects. Dato Tengku Aizan is the doyen of gerontology in Malaysia. She sits in many national committees as an expert in population aging issues. She is a fellow of the Academy of Science Malaysia. She was honoured as Tokoh Warga Emas Wanita by Permaisuri Agong in 2022 for her contribution to the wellbeing of older Malaysians at the national celebration of the International Day
