Yang di-Pertua Negeri Melaka
H.E. TUN SERI SETIA (DR.) HJ. MOHD ALI BIN MOHD RUSTAM is
the Governor of the State of Melaka, Malaysia.
The Governor’s career had humble beginnings, starting as a clerk at the National Electricity Board (now known as Tenaga Nasional Berhad) Melaka in 1969. In 1979, he was the assistant director of the Community Development Department (KEMAS) in Kedah. He was elevated to the position of KEMAS Director for Perlis in 1980 before being transferred to Kuala Lumpur in 1982 where he also served as Director. He was then assigned to his home state of Melaka to serve as KEMAS Director in 1982. Between 1984-1986, he was the Special Officer to the Chief Minister of Melaka.
Tun Ali Rustam began his career in politics in 1986 after he was elected as a Member of the Melaka State Assembly (ADUN) for Air Molek. He was also appointed as a Member of the Melaka State Executive Council (EXCO) holding the portfolio of Housing Committee, Local Government and Environment. In the following 1990 General Elections, he was elected ADUN for Sungai Udang and was once again appointed into the Melaka state EXCO, this time holding a portfolio for Science and Technology Committee. During the 1995 General Elections, Tun Ali Rustam took up federal positions after being voted the Member of Parliament for Batu Berendam. In the same year, he was appointed Deputy Minister of Transport. A cabinet reshuffle then took place in 1998, where Tun Ali Rustam was appointed Deputy Minister of Health.
In 1999, Tun Ali Rustam was once again an elected ADUN in Melaka, this time for the Paya Rumput constituency and became the 9th Chief Minister of Melaka, a position he held for three consecutive terms. He was also the ADUN for Bukit Baru from 2004-2013. His appointed as Yang di-Pertua Negeri Melaka (Governor of Melaka) took place on June 2020.
A son of Melaka, Tun Ali Rustam is an alumnus of the Melaka High School. He has a Bachelor’s Degree in Social Science (Hon) majoring in Economic Development from Universiti Sains Malaysia and also holds a Master’s in Arts from the University of Malaya.
