The Quantum Clock is Ticking: Is Malaysia Ready for the Next Frontier of Cyber Threats?

Vikneswaran Kunasegaran

This article explores the cybersecurity risks posed by quantum computing, particularly its future ability to break current encryption systems that protect global digital infrastructure. The author explains how quantum computing could render existing internet security protocols obsolete and enable “Harvest Now, Decrypt Later” attacks, where hackers steal encrypted data today in anticipation of decrypting it in the future.

The article argues that governments and organisations must urgently prepare for the transition toward post-quantum cryptography (PQC). It highlights Malaysia’s growing efforts in this area, including national frameworks, government investments, and local quantum-resistant technologies, while warning that quantum threats are no longer theoretical but inevitable.
