What does it really take to successfully introduce children to formal schooling at six?

In Ready at Six? Understanding the Standard One Reform, Nadya Liew examines Malaysia’s proposed reduction of the Standard One entry age and highlights an important distinction: policy readiness is not the same as institutional readiness.

The success of the reform will depend not only on children’s developmental readiness, but also on teacher preparation, school capacity, parental guidance and educational equity. Without sufficient support, a reform intended to expand opportunity could unintentionally widen existing inequalities.

The key question is therefore not simply whether six-year-olds are ready for school, but whether the education system is ready for them.
